For thousands of years, man has been using hemp for fiber, paper, clothing, beauty aids,
food, milk , medicinals and more–making it a valuable and versatile natural resource.
Hemp seeds–which are technically a fruit–taste a bit like pine nuts, but with a milder
mellower, flavor–and a softer texture.
Small and round, they have a pleasing, slightly nutty flavor.
Hemp seeds have been hailed as one of the most nutritious foods on the planet.
Eating them–and other hemp-based foods–helps to strengthen our immune systems,
support cardiovascular health and fend off toxins.
What’s more, traditional chinese medicine has been using hemp seeds for more than 2000
years in the treatment of health conditions and ailments.
According to hippiebutter.com:
“Hemp seeds, contain all the
essential amino acids and
essential fatty acids necessary
to maintain healthy human
life–including all ten the
of the essential amino acids.
No other single plant source has
the essential amino acids in such
an easily digestible form, nor
the essential fatty acids in
as perfect a ratio to meet
human nutritional needs.”
Dubbed the world’s most nutritious seeds, hemp seeds are 33% protein, with Omega 3 and
GLA–the healthy EFAs that doctors recommend.
With a perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega-6 Linoleic Acid and Omega-3 Linolenic Acid, they are very
important for cardiovascular health and the immune system.
Omegas per 3 tablespoons:
7.5g Omega-6 LA
3.0g Omega-3 ALA
0.6gSuper Omega-6 GLA
0.3g Super Omega-3 SDA
Hemp seeds contain 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential amino acids (EAAs)
that our bodies cannot produce, which makes them great for vegans.
A 1.5 tablespoon serving of hemp seeds contains:
*5 grams of protein
*86 milligrams of magnesium
*10 percent of RDA for iron
*1245 milligrams of Omega-3 fatty acids
*436 milligrams of Omega-6 fatty acids including GLA),
that supports healthy metabolism, skin, hair and nails
Hemp Seeds are:
*a rich source of phytonutrients, which help support and protect immunity, tissues,
cells, skin, organs, bloodstream and mitochondria.
*a good source for anti-aging antioxidants such as vitamin E.
*rich in other minerals such as zinc and phosphorus.
*highly digestible, so they won’t leave you feeling bloated.
For all of these reasons and more, hemp seeds have earned their status as a super seed.
How to Add Hemp Seeds to Your Diet
At least 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds daily is recommended to derive its benefits.
Hemp seeds can be used to make a variety of dishes including salads, veggie burgers,
dressings and sauces, but I like to “keep it simple” and make fresh, healthy, raw hemp
seed smoothies.
I prefer to use organic fruits and ingredients in my healthy smoothies.
You can also add hemp seeds to cereal, soups and vegetable dishes.
Check out nutiva.com and hippiebutter.com for more hemp recipe ideas as well as
hemp oil, hemp protein and organic hemp shakes.
You’ll be surprised at the versatility of this small seed.
Note: Keep your hemp seeds refrigerated or in the freezer and try to use them
within 8-12 weeks of opening.
Store unopened hemp seed products in a cool dry place such as a basement.

Is it true that eating hemp seeds can cause weight gain ? I’ve just started eating healthy smoothies, and someone told me to stay away from hemp seed if I wanted to drink smoothies to lose weight.
Thank so much, I really enjoy your page.
Take care,
Ray
Hi Ray,
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I understand your concerns about gaining weight. The 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds recommended for addition to smoothie recipes is about 170 calories. So if you use hemp seeds in moderation, I don’t think it should be a problem. Have fun making smoothies!
Hi Deborah,
Your article is packed with awesome information. I enjoy adding hemp seeds to smoothies, oatmeal, salads and hopefully other things in the future. 🙂 The taste is unique, but one that I really like too. I can’t wait to try some of your smoothies.

Evelyn

Hi Deborah love your post! I was wondering how much hemp should I use if I’m going to make enough smoothie for my three children my husband an my self..thanks in advance…great pics by the way!
Hi Crystal,
When I make smoothies the serving size I follow for hemp is usually 1-2 heaping tablespoons per cup of liquid, so if you put a cup of liquid in for each of the 4 people you could add 6-8 tablespoons to cover their nutritional needs. Or yuo could make 2 batches.
I love your post! amazing flavour combination ?

Thanks for so many wonderful ideas. This is my first time using hemp seeds–not hemp hearts–and I am quite excited to begin finding the organic ingredients for the smoothies. One problem is that I have Celiac disease and want to be sure that Chia and hemp seeds are safe for me. Are they gluten free, as a rule?
Thanks so much!
