If you want to live an active and healthy life, you must take good care of your spine. Your spine is your body’s backbone and supports you during most of your daily tasks. Once you begin to have spine issues, you’ll notice your entire body screaming out for help.

Don’t ignore these signs. A healthy spine is essential for proper nerve function because it holds all of the nerves in your body that connect to your brain and other organs. Keep your spine healthy, and you’ll keep your body functioning properly.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to become lost in bad daily habits that take a toll on our spines. Now is the time to recognize these bad habits and make the changes necessary to rid yourself of the bad habits and pick up on the good ones.

In our guide below, we list several tips for a healthy spine. Continue reading below to learn how to strengthen your spine every day!

7 Habits to Develop for a Healthy Spine

1. Stay Active

A body that’s active daily is able to remain active. A body that doesn’t engage in any type of activity throughout the day will have trouble finding that motion again. It’s important to stay active in order to keep your spine moving how it should.

This doesn’t mean completing intense workout routines each day. You can complete some simple exercises throughout the day to keep your spine healthy such as walking in the mornings or on your lunch break. You could also consider stretching each morning when you wake up before starting the day.

If your job requires you to sit for long periods of time, be sure to stretch and get up to do a lap around the office during your lunch breaks or bathroom breaks.

2. Pay Attention to Posture

You also need to pay close attention to your posture. It’s easy to fall into bad posture habits such as slouching at your desk. To keep your spine healthy, sit up straight in your chair with your feet flat on the floor.

Change work positions when possible and limit how much time you sit for. If you can place your computer on a high desk or counter and work while standing up for a length of time, then this is ideal. Be sure to check what kind of chair you use while you work as well.

You want to invest in an ergonomic chair, which will help with posture.

3. Lift Correctly

Some job positions require you to lift heavy objects throughout the day. If you’re lifting on a frequent basis without using proper lifting techniques, you could be doing a lot of harm to your spine. Rather than lifting with your back and spine, lift with your knees.

Bend your knees, keep your back straight, and lift. Although this good habit is most important for those who lift objects on a consistent basis, it’s ideal to keep this in mind when lifting anything.

4. Keep Electronics at Eye Level

With today’s modern technology, we’re now able to work while on the go and keep in contact with friends and family from the palm of our hands. You most likely have some type of electronic device in hand at all times. Think about how you use this device.

Do you hold it at waist level and look down at it? This is common but is a bad habit.

When using your electronics, be sure to hold them at eye level. This prevents the need to bend your spine while looking down.

5. Sleep With Support

Have you ever woken up in the morning and felt an ache in your back or neck? You wake up feeling as though you’ve slept wrong and now you have an entire day ahead of you with back or neck pain.

It’s important to find a mattress and pillow that allows you to sleep with proper spine support. A firm or medium-firm mattress is best for your spine as it’ll keep your spine from sagging into it. When sleeping on your back, place a pillow under your knees for spine support.

When sleeping on your side, place a pillow in between your knees for added support. You can also consider using a pillow for your head that supports your neck and spine as well.

6. Choose the Right Shoes

When choosing shoes, be sure to find ones that offer enough support. They should also fit well. If you wear shoes that are too tight or too loose, it can cause stress on your spine.

You want the right fit with good arch support. Keep your walking posture in mind as well. When walking, try to keep your back straight.

It’s easy to slouch without even noticing you’re doing it. Be aware of how you hold your neck, your head, and your back when walking to keep good posture.
