Types of Dentures

Dr. Yamamoto of Dentist Fairbanks AK practice believes that dentures are not a one-size-fits-all problem-solver, the type of denture should fit individual needs, and you may require one type or a combination to restore your smile. There are different types of dentures. These are mentioned below.

1. Full Dentures

Complete dentures or full dentures consist of lower and upper sets. They are removable and perfect for replacing missing teeth. Generally, the denture teeth are made of acrylic or porcelain and have a metal or acrylic base that keeps it together. If you have lost all of your teeth, full dentures might be ideal. They help fill out the absence of actual teeth and allow you to feel more comfortable when smiling.

2. Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are designed for filling the gap that has been left by missing teeth. Lower or upper partial dentures can be removed when required. They are suitable if you have lost a few of your teeth.

3. Temporary Dentures

Also known as immediate dentures, temporary dentures are fitted right after teeth are removed. When you get temporary dentures, you get to carry on with your life while the new permanent dentures are made. Thus, you would be able to continue eating your favorite foods without having to worry about putting too much pressure on the natural teeth that remain.

Temporary dentures are commonly worn before permanent ones are fitted. They help ease the mouth by reducing pressure while you eat. By wearing temporary dentures, it is possible for the mouth to heal without you having to make any significant changes to your routine.

4. Flexible Dentures

Made out of different materials, flexible dentures are a type of partial denture. They tend to be more comfortable as compared to other removable partials. Moreover, they offer a natural look as they do not have metal parts.

Denture Alternatives

1. Dental Implants

Dental implants are considered to be the most effective alternative. They are made of titanium and have to be surgically inserted into the jawbone. Dental implants act as an anchor for holding the replacement teeth in place. One you have gotten implants, you would need to wait around 3 to 6 months for them to bond with your jawbone. Dental implants have become extremely popular in recent times. They are considered to be a more durable and long-term option.

The best thing about dental implants is that they can easily last a lifetime if you take good care of them. However, it is important to keep in mind that dental implants cannot be removed unlike dental implants.

2. Dental Bridges

If you are only missing one tooth, you can simply opt for a dental bridge. It is a prosthetic tooth which would be kept in place by dental implants or crowns. However, a dental bridge requires the removal of tooth structure from your adjacent teeth for placing the crowns.
